A very special natural monument can be found to the south of the city of Salzburg: the World of Ice Giants, the largest system of ice caves in the world. The World of Ice Giants is a labyrinth of caves riddling the Tennengebirge mountain range which is 40 kilometres long - an awe inspiring display of the forces of nature. The natural caves were created in the space of 100 million years and were discovered by the native Salzburg natural scientist Anton von Posselt-Czorich in 1879. In 1920 the World of Ice Giants in Austria was opened to the open public and attracts countless visitors every year.
